Gene “Geno” Reynard Atkins Jr. was born to his parents, Gene Atkins (father) and Sandra Atkins (mother), on 28 March 1988.
Atkins was born on 28 March 1988 in Pembroke Pines, Florida. In both 2004 and 2005, he attended St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, helping the school become the Class 5A runners-up.
Atkins had 70 tackles as a junior at St. Thomas Aquinas in 2004 (12 resulted in lost yarding), one interception and four fumble recoveries. In 2005, he had 117 tackles, 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries during his senior season.
During the season, Sun-Sentinel and Miami Herald selected him first-team all-county, first-team Class 5A in the state of Florida, and he was also selected Florida Class 5A Defensive Player of the Year.
Geno Atkins College Career
Atkins continued to the University of Georgia after high school, where he played in the football team at the college. He’d appeared in just 11 games in the first season of his college career. He’d won more playing time in his second season.
He was named to All-SEC First-team at the end of the season. His third college football season was also a productive one for Atkins who played in the Capital Bowl. In the 2009 season, he had a very good outing that won a place in the watchlist for the Outland Trophy.

Cincinnati Bengals (2010–date)
Atkins was recruited in the 2010 NFL draft and was picked in the fourth round by the Cincinnati Bengals as their 120th selection. He signed a four-year contract with the Bengals estimated at $3.2 million in July 2010. Atkins appeared in 16 games during his rookie season and started only once.
In the 2011 season, in order to get more playing time, Atkins had to compete with Tank Johnson for the starting spot in the defensive tackle position. In August 2011, he was made the starting defensive tackle.
He continued in 2012 to be called to his first Pro Bowl. He finished his season with the Bengals heading to the AFC Wildcard where they lost to the Houston Rockets.
In the 2012 season, he solidified his place as the team’s starting defensive tackle. In December 2012, he received the second-highest vote for a defensive tackle to earn his second appearance in the Pro Bowl.
He also posted, with 12.5 sacks, the 15th most single sacks in the NFL’s history. He ended the season as one of the contestants for the title of the year’s defensive player.
In September 2013, he signed a five-year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals worth $53.32 million, which included a $15 million bonus. After playing just nine games in the 2013 season, he suffered a leg injury in November 2013. The injury left him out of action for the remainder of the season.
After the arrival at the Cincinnati Bengals of a new defensive coordinator, Atkins maintained his role as the starting defensive tackle for the Bengals. His campaign for 2017 was no different, as he had another excellent outing that saw him earn another Pro Bowl award.
